Providers serving rural and medically underserved communities in Kentucky’s Appalachian region face ongoing barriers to implementing integrated behavioral health (IBH) models. Although strong evidence supports IBH for improving access, outcomes, and care coordination, many physician assistants (PAs) and other rural providers lack the formal training, mentorship, and context-specific professional development necessary to confidently incorporate behavioral health into primary care.

Geographic isolation, workforce shortages, and limited interprofessional educational opportunities contribute to knowledge, competence, and performance gaps. As a result, providers may struggle to effectively screen, manage, and coordinate care for patients with behavioral health conditions.

This educational activity addresses these gaps by providing accessible, virtual, and locally relevant training designed to equip rural healthcare teams with practical, evidence-based strategies for delivering integrated, interprofessional behavioral health care. The program aims to boost provider confidence, improve care coordination, and enhance behavioral health outcomes in underserved Appalachian communities.

Target Audience

Physicians, pharmacists, nurses, social workers, public health professionals, physician assistants, APRNs, physical therapists, ATs, psychologists, clinical administrators, CSD, and MLS.

Learning Objectives

After the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • Examine the unique challenges and opportunities of implementing interprofessional integrated behavioral health care in Appalachian and medically underserved communities.
  • Demonstrate effective interprofessional communication strategies to support collaborative integrated behavioral health care in rural settings.
  • Utilize evidence-based tools to incorporate behavioral health services into rural primary care workflows.
  • Create a sustainable action plan to expand integrated behavioral health services within a rural healthcare organization or community.
  • Assess the impact of interprofessional integrated behavioral health models on access and equity in rural Appalachian populations.
