Patrick Kitzman, PhD, MSPT

I am a Professor in the University of Kentucky, College of Health Sciences, Physical Therapy Program with 26 years of clinical and teaching experience in the treatment of individuals affected by neurological conditions such as stroke and spinal cord injury. I have conducted both basic science and community-based research and have been funded as well as published in each of these areas. I oversee two main programs; the Kentucky Appalachian Rural Rehabilitation Network and the Appalachian Center for Assistive Technology. The Kentucky Appalachian Rural Rehabilitation Network (KARRN) is a collaborative community-based network comprised of individuals with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and stroke, their caregivers, the healthcare providers that serve them, university educators and researchers, and state and local organizations that support them. The mission of KARRN is focused on combining community-based research, education, and service to reduce healthcare disparities for individuals with disabilities living in Kentucky. The Appalachian Center for Assistive Technology (ACAT) is the Assistive Technology Resources Center that provides multiple programs that support individuals with disabilities in rural eastern Kentucky. Specifically, ACAT provides assistive technology demonstrations and consultation, a short term AT loan locker, maker space, workforce training, and a durable medical equipment refurbishing and reutilization program. In addition, ACAT houses additional programs that support the local communities including CARAT (Coordinating and Assisting the Reuse of Assistive Technology) a refinishing and utilization program and CARAT-TOP (Together One Priority), which is a program that brings together students, of all abilities, from local high schools to work as teams on community-based projects focused on increasing accessibility within their community.
