2025 Kentucky Children's Hospital Affiliate Network Conference
The 2025 Kentucky Children's Hospital Affiliate Network Conference is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and confidence of healthcare providers in the assessment and treatment of pediatric patients across a variety of clinical settings, including emergency departments, NICUs, and general pediatric units. Through evidence-based presentations and interactive breakout sessions, participants will explore key topics such as child abuse evaluation, procedural pain management, antimicrobial stewardship, and foreign body removal techniques. The conference aims to close gaps in pediatric care by equipping providers with practical tools and up-to-date protocols to improve outcomes and promote safe, compassionate care for children.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other allied healthcare professionals who are involved in the care of pediatric patients in hospital and emergency settings, particularly in community hospitals or rural healthcare systems.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Apply appropriate comfort techniques and procedural pain interventions to reduce distress and improve coping in pediatric patients undergoing medical procedures.
- Evaluate injuries and determine when findings should raise concern for child maltreatment, utilizing standard workups and available consultative resources.
- Analyze the multidisciplinary approach of the Neuro-NICU and its application in the management of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
- Implement efficient and effective strategies for pediatric foreign body removal, identifying cases requiring specialist consultation.
- Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate antimicrobial use in pediatric patients, including the identification of candidates for penicillin allergy delabeling and updated Lyme disease treatment protocols.
- Describe a variety of comfort techniques and positioning strategies that improve clinical outcomes, reduce pain, and enhance coping in pediatric patients.
- Explain what injuries should raise concern for child maltreatment.
- Discuss basic current HIE pathophysiology and management.
- Identify high-risk situations that require early intervention and often specialist consultation for foreign body removal
- Explain the limitations of cefdinir for common pediatric infections and identify scenarios for penicillin allergy delabeling.
- Analyze case-based scenarios to understand how interdisciplinary collaboration impacts decision making and delivery planning.
- Define medical traumatic stress & describe impact of trauma exposure
- Evaluate and implement current best practices for managing NOWS
- Explain the special considerations in the early phases of pediatric trauma resuscitation
