Management of Pain and Other Chronic Health Conditions in Dementia

Recognition of chronic and even acute pain in patients with dementia is problematic given the many ways pain can manifest in persons that are unable to express their symptoms.

Target Audience

This is for ALL Certified Nursing Facilities personnel in Kentucky.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the assessment of chronic and acute pain and pain treatment on cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric symptoms associated with an underlying degenerative dementia.
2. Develop strategies to assess pain in patients with dementia.
3. Provide an appropriate pain management regimen that will address this issue without exacerbating or with minimization of the effects on underlying cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric symptoms associated with an underlying degenerative dementia.
