Practical Update in Neurology and Neurosurgery

May 15, 2026

The annual Kentucky Neuroscience Institute Practical Update in Neurology and Neurosurgery will take place in person in the Healthy KY Research Building on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY and virtually (Zoom) on Friday, May 15, 2026. This, our 11th annual event, attracts practitioners from across the Commonwealth and surrounding areas. Nearly 150 medical professionals attended last year’s symposium. Our goal is to collaborate with our healthcare partners – the community neurologist, internist, pediatrician, emergency medicine physician, family practice physician, advanced practice provider, and more to provide updates on neurological care that can be used in their daily practices.

  • Distinguish, localize, diagnose, and medically manage common focal nerve lesions using clinical examination and electrodiagnostic studies.
  • Detail a systematic, evidence-based approach to the evaluation and initial management of a child with new-onset epilepsy, including seizure classification, appropriate diagnostic workup (EEG, neuroimaging, and laboratory testing), and selection of first-line antiseizure medication based on seizure type and patient-specific factors.
  • Indicate surgically relevant mononeuropathies and formulate a practical approach to their evaluation, referral, and neurosurgical management.
  • Assess the urgency of a neurosurgical referral for patients presenting with intracranial aneurysms.
  • Define essential tremor using current consensus criteria.
  • Describe the role of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the management of essential tremor (ET), and how UK's approach to DBS has opened doors for more patients to benefit from this therapy.
