Ziyuan Guo, PhD

Dr. Ziyuan Guo is a Principal Investigator specializing in stem cell biology and the development of advanced human brain models. His research utilizes human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to engineer specific neural populations—including neurons and astrocytes—as well as 3D blood-brain barrier (BBB) assembloids and organoid-on-a-chip platforms. These innovative tools provide unprecedented insights into the pathological mechanisms underlying ALS, Alzheimer's disease, Fragile X Syndrome, and schizophrenia.
By integrating these physiologically structured microcircuits with cutting-edge functional readouts, such as multi-omics, whole-cell patch-clamp, and multi-electrode array (MEA) recordings, Dr. Guo’s laboratory investigates how human genetics, transcriptomics, and epitranscriptomics become dysregulated in neurological diseases. His paradigm-shifting modeling approaches and findings have been published in top-tier scientific journals, including Nature, Cell Stem Cell, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Communications, Science Advances, and Advanced Science. Dr. Guo’s rapidly expanding research program is supported by a highly competitive funding portfolio, featuring an NSF CAREER award and multiple NIH R01 and R21 grants.
