ForwardFinancial Literacy: Empowering Financial Stability in Recovery
Originally presented live at the 2026 Kentucky Overdose Prevention Summit.
Eric Dunn, BA examines financial literacy as a critical component of recovery capital for individuals with substance use disorders. The presenter will begin by exploring the systemic and structural barriers to financial stability commonly faced in recovery, including limited banking access, poor or absent credit, legal and debt-related challenges, and the impact of the benefits cliff. The session will cover core financial concepts including budgeting frameworks, debt management, savings strategies, and second-chance banking options. The presenter will address the behavioral and emotional dimensions of money management, recognizing how impulsivity, scarcity mindset, and past financial experiences influence decision-making. Through case-based scenarios and applied tools, participants will gain actionable strategies to support individuals in recovery in building financial stability, increasing financial confidence, and reducing vulnerability to financial shocks. The session emphasizes meeting individuals where they are with nonjudgmental, trauma-informed approaches.
