2026-2027 Diabetes in KY Schools

These modules are intended for school personnel (nurses and designated non-nurse staff) who will provide diabetes-related care and medication administration to students with diabetes in a school setting. Speakers include nurse experts in the field of pediatric diabetes from UKHC Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center, Norton Children's Wendy Novak Center (Louisville), and Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Explain Kentucky state laws and regulations related to diabetes care in the school setting.
  • Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of school nurses and non-medical school personnel in supporting students with diabetes.
  • Summarize diabetes management components, including blood glucose monitoring, medication administration, nutrition, carbohydrate counting, diabetes technology, and healthy coping strategies.
