ForwardPhysical Disability & Motor Function in Dementia
Both normal aging and many degenerative dementias can produce significant changes in motor function that limit activities of daily living and increase dependence on healthcare staff in residential facilities. Parkinsonism and stroke-related deficits are seen commonly in the aged with dementia. Awareness of such comorbidities and the development of appropriate treatment plans for such symptoms and signs are problematic due to a lack of education on treatment modalities other than standard PT/OT recommendations.
Target Audience
This is for ALL Certified Nursing Facilities personnel in Kentucky.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe physical and motor function disorders that contribute to functional decline, increased dependence and threats to safety and well-being in the aged population with cognitive impairment or dementia.
2. Develop personalized treatment strategies that address the physical function and motor decline seen in dementia including parkinsonism, motor neuron disease, and focal deficits related to cerebrovascular disease.
