Date & Time of Session - 10/21/25 - from 1-2PM

Overview
Antimicrobial Stewardship Lecture Series sessions are designed to expose providers, nurses, and pharmacists to the most up to date literature surrounding infectious diseases. The aim is to improve UofL Health prescribing practices to better suit patient outcomes and hospital metrics pertaining to antimicrobial stewardship, including rates of hospital-acquired Clostridioides difficile infections and 2023 Joint Commission standards. This lecture will discuss successful navigation of antimicrobial drug allergies, which are frequently reported but also may be inappropriately risk stratified. By appropriate management of antimicrobial allergies, there is potential for improved outcomes and cost savings.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Review commonly reported antimicrobial allergies
2. Describe the drug chemistry of various β-lactams and IgE/IgG mediated allergies related to penicillin
3. Discuss cross-reactivity between penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams
4. Explore the available data regarding using various β-lactams in setting of allergies
5. Review updated guidance from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI) and American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) on managing antimicrobial allergies
6. Compare tools and strategies for reducing unnecessary avoidance of β-lactams in patients with various presentations of β-lactam allergies
