Overview
MTHFR genetic testing has become increasingly popular among patients seeking answers for various health concerns, yet widespread misinformation and direct-to-consumer marketing have created confusion about its clinical utility. Healthcare providers, including pharmacists, are likely to be asked about MTHFR testing, methylfolate supplementation, and claims linking these variants to numerous conditions. By recognizing and understanding that currently guidelines do not support MTHFR testing, which supplement formulations are supported by evidence, and how to compassionately address patient concerns and gaps in knowledge, pharmacists can serve as trusted resources who improve patient outcomes while preventing unnecessary testing and spending. This education fills a critical gap in helping pharmacists navigate the intersection of genetics and medication management while providing patients with relevant and guidelines-based care.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Review the normal biochemical function of MTHFR
2. Examine how common genetic variants alter enzyme activity
3. Assess common claims regarding MTHFR polymorphisms and their clinical implications
4. Apply evidence-based folate supplementation strategies for patients with MTHFR polymorphisms
