Date & Time of Session - 12/5/25 - from 12:00 - 1:00PM
Overview
Toxic hyperthermic syndromes encompass a group of acute, life-threatening reactions characterized by severe hyperthermia, autonomic instability, and neuromuscular abnormalities, often precipitated by pharmacologic or anesthetic exposure. These syndromes pose significant diagnostic challenges due to overlapping clinical manifestations, yet accurate differentiation is essential to ensure timely and appropriate intervention. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to contribute to early recognition and management through their understanding of medication mechanisms, interactions, and adverse effect profiles. Delays in diagnosis or inappropriate treatment selection can lead to substantial morbidity and mortality, underscoring the need for improved clinical awareness and interdisciplinary collaboration. This presentation aims to enhance understanding of the diagnostic approach, clinical differentiation, and evidence-based management of toxic hyperthermic syndromes, with an emphasis on the pharmacist’s role in optimizing patient outcomes through rapid identification, informed decision-making, and coordination of care in the acute and critical care environment.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the characteristic features, pathophysiology, and common triggers of major medication-induced toxic hyperthermic syndromes.
2. Differentiate among medication-induced toxic hyperthermic syndromes by analyzing patient cases and clinical presentations.
3. Evaluate current evidence and treatment strategies guiding the diagnosis and management of these syndromes.
