Date & Time of Session - 3/27/26 - from 12:00 - 1:00PM

Overview
Traditional antibiotic durations such as 7, 10, or 14 days were often established from habit and historical practice rather than strong comparative evidence. Current data now support shorter courses for many common infections, showing similar clinical outcomes with less toxicity, less C. difficile, lower resistance pressure, and less treatment burden.

Despite this, prolonged therapy remains common due to practice patterns, fear of relapse, and uncertainty when it is safe to stop. This project addresses the need for practical education on evidence-based antibiotic duration, with emphasis on clinical stability, source control, and syndrome-specific data to help clinicians shorten therapy safely and consistently.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the historical basis of conventional (7–14 day) antibiotic durations
2. Explain the biological and PK/PD rationale supporting shorter antibiotic courses
3. Summarize disease-specific evidence supporting shorter durations of therapy
