Overview
Angioedema is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by acute swelling of the deep subcutaneous and mucosal tissues. Episodes involving the larynx can rapidly progress to airway compromise, making prompt recognition and treatment essential. With multiple subtypes driven by distinct histamine- or bradykinin-mediated mechanisms, selecting the appropriate acute therapy can be challenging. As guidelines evolve and targeted therapies expand, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to help identify the underlying mechanism, guide appropriate treatment selection, and optimize patient outcomes in emergency settings.
 

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the pathophysiology of angioedema, highlighting the key differences between histamine- and bradykinin-mediated mechanisms 
2. Identify key clinical features to evaluate patients presenting with angioedema
3. Review evidence-based treatment and management strategies for angioedema
