Date & Time of Session - 10/10/25 - from 12:00 - 1:00PM
Overview
Although amiodarone and lidocaine are both included in current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) guidelines for the management of ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (pVT), uncertainty remains regarding their comparative efficacy, safety, and optimal use in specific patient populations. Recent clinical trials and guideline updates highlight evolving evidence, however, questions remain regarding the long term and neurologic outcomes between the two antiarrhythmics. This knowledge gap can lead to inconsistent application in practice and potential variation in resuscitation outcomes. A focused, evidence-based educational session is needed to review guideline recommendations, compare available literature, and provide practical strategies for optimizing antiarrhythmic selection in refractory VF/pVT.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Review the current ACLS guidelines for the management of shockable cardiac arrest rhythms.
2. Compare the pharmacology, mechanism of action, and pharmacokinetics of amiodarone and lidocaine.
3. Evaluate the evidence supporting the use of amiodarone vs. lidocaine in cardiac arrest.
4. Assess clinical considerations for drug selection during resuscitation
Target Audience
Pharmacists, residents, and students
