Overview
Methylene blue is a very polarizing drug in the world of medicine that has many possible applications and indications, with a recent increase in attention in the world of critical care. Despite its potential to be effective for patients in refractory shock, clinical use remains inconsistent due to lack of guideline support, knowledge gaps around implementation and safety, and variable dosing strategies. These reasons along with a recent increase in popularity highlight the need for a review of current literature to help determine a place in therapy, address safety concerns, highlight various dosing strategies and considerations.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Review the clinical background, mechanisms, and key adverse effects of methylene blue
2. Explore evidence surrounding the use of methylene blue in various shock states
3. Discuss various dosing strategies for the implementation of methylene blue :
