Need/Overview
New extended spectrum antibiotics have offered safer alternatives for resistant gram-negative organisms. Each of these new agents has niche places in therapy, and while overlap exists, it is essential to understand the nuances in order to effectively treat these complicated organisms.
The use of GLP1s for weight management is rapidly increasing (from 2019 to 2023, GLP1 use for weight management increased 700%), and it's imperative that pharmacists understand how these medications work to recommend them appropriately and how to counsel patients to optimize their use and minimize side effects. We'll review newly approved medications and indications for GLP1s in this presentation.
Recently, St. Elizabeth pharmacy has started to manage and process orders for RH immune globulin, a process previously handled by the blood bank. There are various indications for administration of RH immune globulin both antepartum and postpartum and the labs associated with the indications can be confusing. Understanding the indications for RH immune globulin and the cascading of the labs is important for pharmacists to feel confident in processing these orders.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Recognize the varying mechanisms of Gram-negative antibiotic resistance
2. Demonstrate the appropriate selection of novel extended-spectrum antibiotics based on confirmed or presumed mechanism of resistance
3. Describe the mechanism of action of GLP-1 receptor agonists in obesity management
4. Analyze key findings from the SELECT and SURMOUNT trials to evaluate the efficacy and cardiometabolic benefits of semaglutide and tirzepatide
5. Discuss evidence-based strategies for patient selection, dosing and titration, and counseling to optimize GLP-1 RA therapy and minimize adverse effects, including muscle loss
6. Recognize appropriate indications for administration of RH immune globulin during the antenatal and postpartum phases.
7. Identify when additional laboratory information is needed to confirm appropriateness of an RH immune globulin order.
