Breaking Beta-Lactams: The ESBL Challenge - The prevalence of ESBL-producing organisms is becoming an increasing concern in both community and hospital settings. These organisms are capable of hydrolyzing many commonly used beta-lactams, limiting first-line antibiotics and pushing towards carbapenem usage—raising concerns about stewardship and resistance pressure. The role of clinical pharmacists is essential in the recommendation of appropriate therapy and guiding antimicrobial stewardship interventions to preserve carbapenems.
