After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why early trauma is a risk factor for the later development of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions
  • Describe the bidirectional relationship between trauma and addiction and detail how trauma affects the stress response system and arousal system
  • Illustrate the principles of trauma-informed addictions counseling, features of these approaches, and examples of integrated treatment protocol
