Overview
Despite advances in the management of status epilepticus, uncertainty remains regarding the optimal selection and sequencing of anti-seizure medications after first-line benzodiazepine therapy. Lacosamide has gained increasing attention as an alternative to traditional second- and third-line agents due to its unique mechanism of action, favorable adverse effect profile, and ease of administration. As emerging adult and pediatric literature continues to challenge established treatment paradigms, clinicians should evaluate where lacosamide should fall within status epilepticus algorithms. This session will review the pharmacologic rationale, efficacy, safety, and current literature supporting lacosamide use in status epilepticus.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Describe the pharmacologic properties of lacosamide that support its use in the management of status epilepticus
2. Evaluate the efficacy and safety of lacosamide for established and refractory status epilepticus in pediatric and adult patients
3. Apply current evidence to determine the appropriate role of lacosamide within status epilepticus treatment algorithms
