7th Annual Substance Use Research Event (SURE) - SUPRA - University of Kentucky

The Substance Use Research Event (SURE) is SUPRAs annual research day where speakers for across the country and within UK come together to present their substance use research findings. This event has two plenary speakers who are from different universities across the country along with poster presentations and four breakout sessions. 

Target Audience

Nurses, Physicians, Psychologists, UK Faculty, Staff, Students, and Community Members.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Summarize current research conducted by interdisciplinary scholars on the causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of substance use.

  2. Identify and compare emerging pharmacological strategies and novel molecular targets under investigation for the treatment of opioid and methamphetamine use disorders.

  3. Describe current methamphetamine trends in the street drug supply and compare outcomes for opioid–methamphetamine co-use versus other forms of polydrug use.

  4. Summarize the evidence base for emerging medications for methamphetamine use disorder and explain clinical touchpoints for harm reduction and overdose prevention.

  5. Analyze how policy changes impact real-world practice in nicotine, cannabis, and opioid use, and evaluate implications for improving substance use disorder care.

  6. Describe alcohol use research across disciplines, including its impact on immune function, associations with mental health, and strategies to prevent alcohol use among at-risk populations.

9:15 – 10:15 Morning Plenary: Dr. Bita Moghaddam – HARRIS BALLROOM
“Evolution of the Role of Glutamate in Dopamine-Related Symptoms of Mental Illness”

Bita Moghaddam is a distinguished neuroscientist known for her research on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying mental health disorders including schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. She has published extensively in leading scientific journals. Her work is widely cited and has been influential in shaping current theories about the neurobiological underpinnings of mental health disorders and guiding future research directions. Moghaddam is the recipient of many prestigious research and mentoring awards. She has served on numerous editorial and advisory boards as well as educational and service-oriented organizations to raise awareness about mental health issues and the importance of neuroscience research. She is currently Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience and Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University.

 

1:00 – 2:00 Afternoon Plenary, Robert Straus Substance Use Translational Science Lectureship: Dr. John Kelly – HARRIS BALLROOM
“The Changing Approach to Addiction: From Crime to Clinic and Community”

Dr. John Kelly is the Elizabeth R. Spallin Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School – the first endowed professor in addiction medicine at Harvard. He is also the Founder and Director of the Recovery Research Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the National Center on Youth Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery at MGH. Additionally, he serves as Chief of the Division of Addiction Treatment and Prevention across the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Academic Medical Centers Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. Kelly is a former President of the American Psychological Association’s Society of Addiction Psychology, a founding member and inaugural President of the American Board of Addiction Psychology, a Fellow of the APA, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He has served as a consultant to U.S. federal agencies, non-federal institutions, foreign governments, the United Nations, and the World Health Organization.

He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, chapters, and books in the field of addiction medicine and was an author on the U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health. Dr. Kelly has received numerous state, national, and international lifetime achievement and distinguished scientist awards for his work. His clinical and research efforts have focused on addiction treatment and recovery processes, mechanisms of behavior change, and reducing stigma and discrimination toward individuals suffering from addiction.
