Dementia with Lewy Bodies is a common but under recognized form of dementia. Lack of education regarding the clinical diagnosis results in under-diagnosis of this disorder and suboptimal treatment of these patients
Pervasive dogma in the field suggests that such differentiation is not important for healthcare decisions. Furthermore, the focus of care is focused on the lack of cures for these conditions rather than on identifying treatable symptom complexes that differ widely between types of dementia. Yet such information is critical for current care and future planning and prognosis
Target Audience
This series is for ALL Certified Nursing Facilities personnel in Kentucky.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe the differences between treatable symptoms and comorbidities in different forms of dementia
- Distinguish the most common types of dementia
- Develop appropriate treatment plans designed to reduce quality health care for residents to meet minimal federal standards
- Recognize the signs and symptoms suggestive of Dementia with Lewy Bodies
- Describe the early Age of Onset
- Discuss the difficulty getting the right diagnosis
- Review the “Atypical” Dementia Symptoms
