Overview of Dementia & CMS Long Term Care Requirements

Utilizing a series of cases, participants will demonstrate newly acquired skills in the recognition and diagnosis of dementia in CNF residents. Participants also need to demonstrate the ability to understand how dementia contributes to many of the major CMS healthcare deficiencies seen in KY CNFs and explain the KY OIG regulations including Medical Director Responsibilities for ensuring the current standards of care provided in the facility meet changes in regulations and guidelines consistent with the 3 phases of CMS implementation.

Target Audience

This series is for ALL Certified Nursing Facilities personnel in Kentucky.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the difference between age-related changes in cognition and changes that signal the presence of a medically relevant decline in cognition
  • Describe the use of the AAN Practice Parameter to screen for non-degenerative medical conditions that may mimic degenerative dementia
  • Recognize the top CMS healthcare deficiencies in KY Certified Nursing Facilities
