ForwardKY MARK: Pediatric Depression - Basics & Beyond
The Kentucky Mental Health Care Access for Resiliencyin Kids Program ensures that pediatric primary care and other providers working with children are confident and competent in screening and helping children with behavioral conditions. This training will increase the providers' knowledge and skills, resulting in earlier identification, diagnosis, and treatment for children with mild to moderate behavioral needs. Completing this educational series will advance the integration of children's behavioral health and pediatric primary care.
Statement of Need: To enhance recognition of treatment of pediatric depression in primary care settings.
Target Audience
The target audience of Kentucky Mental Health Care Access for Resiliency in Kids Program includes physicians, nurses, and public health professionals.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Recognize the need for pediatric depression in clinical practice.
2. Discuss first-line treatments for adolescent depression.
3. Summarize recent research on adolescent depression and suicide.
4. Recognize when to ask for consultation from a child and adolescent psychiatrist or other mental health specialist.
Upon completion of this educational series, participants will be able to:
1. Diagnose pediatric mental health disorders.
2. Treat pediatric mental health disorders.
3. Manage pediatric mental health disorders.

Amy Lynn Meadows is a triple-boarded pediatrician, psychiatrist, and child and adolescent psychiatrist at the University of Kentucky where she is the Dr. Laurie L. Humphries Endowed Chair in Child Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry Division Director. She received her combined MD and Master’s degrees from Yale University School of Medicine where she completed a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship, and then went on to residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, including Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Western Psychiatric Hospital. Since joining the faculty of the University of Kentucky, she has won numerous teaching and mentorship awards, including the Abraham Flexner Award for excellence in medical education and the “Teacher Who Made a Difference” award. She works on the Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Her research examines how adverse childhood experiences shape risk perception and the development of high-risk behaviors in adolescence and emerging adulthood.
