Two Hearts, One Mission: A Sister’s Story of Survival, Loss, and Purpose Through Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM)

This presentation was recorded during the live meeting titled "Kentucky Symposium for Maternal and Infant Outcomes" on August 27-28, 2025. If you attended that event and claimed credit you should not claim credit for this module.

Good afternoon, and thank you again for the opportunity to speak at the upcoming Annual KyMMM Symposium. I am truly honored to share my personal journey with Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM), alongside the story of my sister, Crystal, whose life was tragically lost six months postpartum. Our experiences fuel the mission of the nonprofit I founded, LetsTalkPPCM, and I look forward to contributing to this important conversation on maternal health.

Target Audience

This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and individuals with lived experience.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the Early Warning Signs of Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM)
2. Review how symptoms like shortness of breath, swelling, and fatigue can be overlooked as normal postpartum recovery.
3. Explore how medical bias contributes to delayed diagnosis and treatment of PPCM.
4. Draw from the tragic outcome of Crystal’s experience and the lack of postpartum cardiac care.
5. Follow the journey of how loss and survival led to the founding of LetsTalkPPCM, now serving families and survivors nationwide.
