Trauma-informed Care as a Universal Precaution

Psychological trauma is an affliction of the powerless. At the moment of trauma, the victim is rendered helpless by overwhelming force. When the force is that of nature, we speak of disasters. When the force is that of other human beings, we speak of atrocities. Traumatic events overwhelm the ordinary systems of care that give people a sense of control, connection, and meaning.… Traumatic events are extraordinary, not because they occur rarely, but rather because they overwhelm the ordinary human adaptations to life.… They confront human beings with the extremities of helplessness and terror and evoke the responses of catastrophe.

Target Audience

This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and individuals with lived experience.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Realize the dynamic evolution of trauma-informed care implementation from trauma-aware to trauma-informed/healing-centered systems
2. Identify the six pillars of trauma-informed care and how they apply to individual and system-based approaches to care
3. Demonstrate how to incorporate trauma-informed approaches into routine care, focusing on communication, empathy, and creating a safe environment
4. Highlight the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration to improve continuity of care
