Substance Use Disorder Sequelae and Stigma Training
This activity is designed for the interprofessional healthcare team to bridge a critical gap in care for patients with substance use disorder (SUD). While many clinicians treat the acute complications of SUD, such as overdose, opportunities for early identification and intervention are often missed. This session will equip physicians, nurses, social workers, and public health professionals with the essential skills to move from reactive to proactive care. Participants will learn to recognize the early clinical signs of SUD, manage common medical sequelae like skin and soft tissue infections, utilize stigma-reducing communication techniques, and effectively link patients to evidence-based treatment and community resources. The ultimate goal is to improve clinician confidence and performance, leading to increased patient engagement in care, reduced overdose rates, and better health outcomes.
