The State of Maternal Health in Kentucky

Health equity is achieved when everyone can reach their full health potential, and no one is disadvantaged from this potential due to socially determined circumstances, constructs, or positions. Healthcare must examine its role in creating, perpetuating, and correcting systemic inequities and biases in the healthcare delivery system to achieve equitable outcomes and anti-racist clinical encounters.

Target Audience

This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and dentists.

Learning Objectives

Upon Completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss meaning of health equity
  2. Overview of current state of maternal health in the Commonwealth
  3. Describe Social Determinants of Health and their role in contributing to health care disparities
  4. Discuss initiatives we can employ to combat these inequities
