Redefining Recovery: Measuring Hope, Healing, and Capital in Recovery Support
Originally presented live at the 2026 Kentucky Overdose Prevention Summit.
Billy O'Bryan, APSS and Chelsea Craycraft, MAEd will introduce the Recovery Capital Index (RCI), a strengths-based framework developed by Commonly Well and validated through national research, that measures personal, social, and cultural resources sustaining long-term wellness. Drawing on longitudinal data from Young People in Recovery (YPR) spanning 2023-2025, the session will demonstrate how RCI scores illuminate growth in hope, stability, and connection among program participants. Real-world examples will illustrate how YPR chapters use the RCI to guide programming, strengthen peer support, and inform advocacy at local and state levels. The session will include an interactive component where attendees engage with sample RCI questions and reflect on their own recovery capital concepts. The presenters will address implementation challenges, emerging opportunities, and the role of recovery capital measurement in shaping future policy and community-based recovery systems.
Session Learning Objectives:
Describe the purpose of the Young People in Recovery impact evaluation and the methods used to measure program outcomes.
Explain the concepts of recovery capital and life satisfaction and how they relate to long-term recovery success.
Identify key findings from the YPR impact report, including improvements in life satisfaction and recovery capital among participants.
Discuss the role of pro-social programming and peer support in strengthening recovery outcomes.
Recognize how data from the Recovery Capital Index (RCI) and life satisfaction measures can inform program improvement and community recovery efforts.
Presenters:
Billy O'Bryan, APSS - Kentucky Program Director, Young People in Recovery (YPR)
Chelsea Craycraft, MAEd - National Program Director, Young People in Recovery (YPR)
