Recognizing Medical Conditions that Mimic Dementia

Many healthcare providers equate dementia with Alzheimer’s disease. Few understand or diagnose across the full spectrum of causes for the appearance of a clinical dementia. In our studies, almost one-third of subjects with memory problems had an identifiable medical cause for dementia that was missed on routine medical examination by their primary medical team.
 
Pervasive dogma in the field suggests that such differentiation is not important for healthcare decisions. Furthermore, the focus of care is on the lack of cures for these conditions rather than on identifying treatable symptom complexes in many patients presenting with memory loss or other cognitive symptoms.

Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Nursing Home Administrators, Home Health Providers, and other health care professionals.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:
  • List at least three reversible medical conditions that could mimic the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease
  • Discuss the American Academy of Neurology practice parameters for recommended clinical tests and evaluations that should be completed in order to rule out reversible causes of the dementia
  • Recognize the unique clinical strategies in screening for cognitive impairment with special populations, such as persons with intellectual disabilities
