Prenatal Opioid and Hepatitis C Co-Exposure: Neonatal and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes
This presentation was recorded during the live meeting titled "Kentucky Symposium for Maternal and Infant Outcomes" on August 27-28, 2025. If you attended that event and claimed credit you should not claim credit for this module.
Rates of drug overdose deaths in Kentucky are on the rise and Kentucky has one of the highest rates of neonatal abstinence syndrome per 1,000 birth hospitalizations per (2023 data). Opioids accumulate in placental tissues, increasing opioid levels in fetal circulation. There is an opportunity for increased HCV screening/treatment postnatally with recommendation for post-natal follow up for patients with SUD within 3-months of delivery.
Target Audience
This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and individuals with lived experience.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe neonatal health risks linked to prenatal opioid exposure (POE) and maternal hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection
2. Appreciate the application cord blood–derived microglia-like cells (iMGL) as a patient-specific model for evaluating fetal neurodevelopment
3. Explain the role of microglia in fetal brain development and mechanisms by which in utero opioid and HCV exposure alters microglial structure and function.
4. Link changes in microglia structure and function with observed deficits in infant cognitive, motor, or language development.
5. Recognize policies or clinical interventions needed to mitigate neurodevelopmental risks in opioid- and HCV-exposed newborns.
