- Explain the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying pediatric venous thromboembolism (VTE) to inform diagnostic reasoning and management decisions.
- Analyze the contribution of genetic and acquired risk factors to VTE development in pediatric patients to guide targeted investigations.
- Compare pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment strategies for pediatric VTE, emphasizing mechanisms of action, monitoring, and potential complications.
- Evaluate how clinical variables such as age, comorbidities, and provoking factors influence the duration and intensity of VTE therapy in children.
Dr. Smith is a board certified pediatric hematologist and oncologist at UK Healthcare. He completed his residency training in pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN, followed by fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He is clinical faculty taking care of a wide variety of hematologic and oncologic conditions, but has interest in bleeding and clotting disorders, heavy menstrual bleeding in adolescents, and iron deficiency anemia
