Mental Well-Being in Medicine

Careers in medicine carry higher risk for compassion fatigue, burnout, mood disorders, and suicidality.  In this podcast, we will discuss what contributes to poor mental well-being in medicine, which factors are beyond our control, and which factors we might have some power to change.

Target Audience

physicians, residents, medical students, and other healthcare providers

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Identify problematic personal narratives common to medicine, including themes of perfectionism, worth via performance, and the myth of sole responsibility, which may affect mental wellness.
  • Identify markers of compassion fatigue and how we might protect ourselves from the “absorption vulnerability” that infiltrates our day-to-day work.

  • Describe the importance of boundaries - physical, cognitive, and emotional - and where these could feasibly be implemented in our workday.

  • Select 1-2 next best steps toward recapturing the joy in medicine.
