Ky COMPASS: Kentucky Consultation & Outreach for Maternal Psychiatry and Support Services: The Role of Teamwork in Addressing Maternal Mental Health

Over 80% of maternal deaths in the US were deemed preventable, underscoring urgent need for mental health interventions. KyCOMPASS: A vital resource driving the transformation of perinatal mental healthcare across KY by providing expert support, education, and coordinated services for providers and patients alike.

Target Audience

This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and individuals with lived experience.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Define the role of medical director within KyCOMPASS and outline strategic goals and future initiatives to enhance maternal and mental health support. 
2. Analyze the impact of untreated maternal mental health conditions and evaluate the role of healthcare providers in early identification and intervention. 
3. Describe the mission and vision of KyCOMPASS and explain its three core pillars – psychiatric consultation, education, and resource/referral services as tools for improving mental health care delivery. 
4. Demonstrate how KyCOMPASS operates and justify its integration into clinical practice for healthcare professionals across Kentucky to support patient outcomes.
