Hot Topic: ‘The Big 3’ Training

Almost half of maternal mortality is pregnancy-associated. There is a significant increase in Kentucky’s maternal deaths due to PG-associated causes (particularly associated with Opioid epidemic) and >50% of maternal deaths are not addressed in a medical setting. The Big 3 causes of pregnancy-associated deaths are Violence, mental health, and  sub stance use.  All 3 can be addressed in healthcare or community settings and All 3 are Preventable with training and interprofessional teamwork.

Target Audience

This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and individuals with lived experience.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe The Big 3 factors that contribute to injuries and deaths among pregnant and postpartum patients (i.e., intimate partner violence (IPV), anxiety and depression, and substance use).
2. Discuss major consequences of The Big 3​
