ForwardEvery Touchpoint Matters: Perinatal Mental Health and Overdose Prevention
Originally presented live at the 2026 Kentucky Overdose Prevention Summit (Louisville, KY). The presenter explores the intersection of perinatal mental health, substance use disorder, and overdose risk, emphasizing the critical opportunities that arise during the perinatal period to identify and address these concerns. The session highlights the role of navigators across clinical and community settings in recognizing perinatal depression, assessing substance use, and implementing compassionate, trauma-informed interventions. Practical strategies for screening, communication, and referral are shared, with a focus on leveraging every patient interaction as an opportunity to support maternal well-being, reduce stigma, and promote safety for both parent and infant.
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the relationship between perinatal depression, substance use disorder, and increased risk of overdose during the perinatal period.
2. Apply trauma-informed and non-stigmatizing communication strategies when discussing mental health, substance use, and overdose prevention with perinatal patients.

The presenter will explore the intersection of perinatal mental health, substance use disorder, and overdose risk, emphasizing the critical opportunities that arise during the perinatal period to identify and address these concerns. The session will highlight the role of navigators across clinical and community settings in recognizing perinatal depression, assessing substance use, and implementing compassionate, trauma-informed interventions. Practical strategies for screening, communication, and referral will be shared, with a focus on leveraging every patient interaction as an opportunity to support maternal well-being, reduce stigma, and promote safety for both parent and infant. The presenter will draw on her experience as an IBCLC and nurse in perinatal women's care, and will provide an overview of the HRSA-funded KyCompass consultation program for primary care and obstetric providers.
