End Stage Dementia and End-of-Life Care

Many healthcare providers do not conceptualize degenerative dementia as a fatal, uncurable condition and do not take appropriate steps to ensure adequate end-of-life care. Current hospice mentality focuses on physical impairment related to systemic organ system failure. Ideally, end-of-life care should be prepared for and initiated with end-stage brain failure irrespective of the health of systemic organ systems.

Target Audience

Physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, nursing home administrators, home health providers, allied health providers, social workers, and other health care professionals who work with persons with Alzheimer’s Disease.

  3. Create an environment conducive to comfort care for persons in the end-stage of dementia.
  4. Discuss different types of spiritual expression and how to use them to provide end-of-life spiritual care and support to people with end-stage dementia.
