Cardiac Conditions in Pregnancy: Addressing a Leading Cause of Pregnancy-related Death

There are significant changes in the cardiovascular system in pregnancy. Cardiovascular conditions are often overlooked in pregnancy and many of the deaths from cardiovascular disease are preventable. A standardized screening tool may be helpful in identifying patients with cardiovascular conditions.

Target Audience

This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and individuals with lived experience.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss maternal mortality as it relates to cardiovascular disease
2. Identify the issues associated with cardiac disease in pregnancy
3. Discuss physiologic changes associated with the cardiovascular system
4. Address the needs in developing a multidisciplinary team to address women at risk for cardiovascular disease
5. Discuss State PQC involvement in Cardiac Conditions in Obstetric Care (COCC)
