2026 Pharmacy Technician Immunization Training
Recent responses to public health emergencies (state and federal) have expanded the role of pharmacy technicians to include active participation in immunization administration. This is especially important now due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the rollout of vaccines. Kentucky 201 KAR 002-410E and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-PREP act specifies that "a pharmacy technician may administer a vaccine ordered by a pharmacist or pursuant to the prescriber-approved protocol or prescription drug order to an individual, aged three (3) or older". Pharmacy technicians are now allowed to provide immunizations in Kentucky. However, there is a lack of training resources. This course aims to bridge that gap.
Target Audience
The target audience for this course is certified, pharmacy technicians.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the parts of KY 201 KAR 002-410E and PREP act that are pertinent to Pharmacy Technicians.
2. Review basic immunology and select vaccines that are pertinent to practice.
3. Define the technicians' role in the steps of the immunization process (screening, administration, filling orders).
4. Display effective communication skills when addressing a patient or caregiver.
5. Recall vaccine storage/handling/temperature requirements.
6. Discuss the correct method(s) for preparing vaccines for administration.
7. Demonstrate the proper administration technique for each type of vaccination.
8. Recognize types of adverse vaccine events and how to manage them.
9. Explore the UK Healthcare Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan and Universal Precautions.
10. List vaccine administration documentation requirements.
11. Review professional liability coverage recommendations.
12. Perform a live immunization technique check-off in the presence of an Immunization Certified Pharmacist
