De-Escalating Athletes

Adolescents can become agitated and lose the ability to regulate their emotions and behavior in the moment for a variety of reasons. How adults respond can influence the adolescent’s behavior. This module will illustrate how to and how not to respond to an adolescent who is agitated. The escalation/de-escalation cycle will be illustrated and described.

Target Audience

The target audience for this course includes high school coaches and other athletics personnel.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify stages of escalation.
  2. Know how to work with adolescents who are escalating.
