Faculty Biographical Sketch

Academic:

Michael T. Kane, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he serves as Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Operations, Director of Clinical Informatics, and Assistant Program Director of the Clinical Informatics Fellowship. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University and completed general psychiatry residency, child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship, and clinical informatics fellowship at UNC. Dr. Kane is board certified in psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and clinical informatics.

Clinical:

Dr. Kane is a practicing child and adolescent psychiatrist and leads the UNC Psychiatry Coordination Team, a centralized service supporting psychiatric admissions, transfers, and discharge planning. His clinical and operational work focuses on improving access, care transitions, patient safety, and inpatient psychiatric throughput. He also serves as an inpatient child and adolescent attending psychiatrist and provides ambulatory child and adolescent psychiatry supervision in a teaching clinic for second year psychiatry residents and first year child and adolescent fellows.

Other:

Dr. Kane serves as Lead Informatics Physician for UNC Health and has led enterprise electronic health record initiatives including implementation of Epic's Behavioral Health module and a digital civil commitment workflow. He helped found and directs the UNC Psychiatry Clinical Informatics educational track and has developed informatics, analytics, and governance programs that support behavioral health quality improvement, clinical operations, and research. His scholarly work focuses on building durable, data-informed systems of psychiatric care and training the next generation of clinical informaticians.
