Syringe Services Programs (SSP’s), also called Syringe Exchange Programs (SEP’s), are a key component of a comprehensive strategy to address the opioid, HIV and Hepatitis C epidemics, providing public health services to a highly vulnerable population. Despite the benefits that SSP’s/SEP’s provide there is a lack of understanding of the services and role they serve in a community.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe the evolving opioid, HIV and Hepatitis C epidemics.
- Describe key principles of harm reduction and the role of syringe services programs in reaching a highly vulnerable population.
- Explain successes, challenges and lessons learned from harm reduction syringe service programs in four Kentucky communities.
