Date & Time of Session - 11/24/25 - from 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Needs/Overview
Many reported beta-lactam allergies are not true allergies. Use of alternative antibiotics for infections for which beta-lactams are typically used first-line can expose patients to unnecessarily broad coverage, undesirable adverse effects, and more costly therapies. The collection of a proper history and classification of a reaction as an allergy or intolerance enables safe beta-lactam use and promotes antimicrobial stewardship. During this presentation, I would like to review identification of types of reported reactions and appropriate treatment decision-making for patients with a documented beta-lactam allergy.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Recall the importance of correct documentation and management of penicillin allergies and intolerances.
2. Distinguish a true beta-lactam allergy from a beta-lactam intolerance.
3. Select the appropriate treatment strategy based on the severity of a penicillin allergy.
