Needs/Overview
Status epilepticus is a critical and life-threatening condition that involves continuous seizure activity with no recovery. There are well-established first- and second-line treatment algorithms utilized in deciphering which treatment would be most appropriate for patients presenting with status epilepticus, such as benzodiazepines, levetiracetam, and phenytoin. Patients that continue to exhibit epileptic activity after first- and second- line medications have been given prove to be difficult cases, and oftentimes, treatment teams look to the pharmacist to provide a recommendation for the next steps in therapy. Appropriate initiation of therapy for these patients is extremely important, as to avoid long-term neurological damage and reduce mortality. Guidance for refractory and super- refractory status epilepticus is not well described, and I believe this review would be beneficial to provide pharmacists at St. Elizabeth evidence-based treatment options for this patient population.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the etiology and pathophysiology of epilepsy.
2. Identify the differences in clinical presentation with types of epilepsy, in addition to characteristics of status epilepticus.
3. Analyze evidence-based treatment algorithms used for status epilepticus, along with refractory status epilepticus, and appropriate monitoring strategies for post status epilepticus episode recovery.
