Beyond the Band-Aid
Beyond the Band-Aid: Comprehensive Management of Chronic Wounds
Chronic wounds, including pressure injuries, diabetic foot ulcers, venous ulcers, and arterial ulcers, continue to present significant clinical and economic challenges across healthcare settings. Accurate identification of wound etiology and timely implementation of evidence-based treatment strategies are essential to improving healing outcomes, reducing complications, and preventing unnecessary hospitalizations and amputations.
This educational activity is designed to enhance healthcare providers' knowledge and competency in the assessment, differentiation, prevention, and management of chronic wounds. Wound care specialists will provide a comprehensive review of the clinical characteristics and underlying pathophysiology of venous and arterial ulcers, best practices for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries, and current recommendations for the evaluation and management of diabetic foot ulcers.
In addition, participants will gain an understanding of advanced wound care modalities, including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO), with discussion of appropriate indications, contraindications, expected outcomes, and referral considerations. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based treatment selection, multidisciplinary collaboration, and strategies to optimize patient outcomes.
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be better equipped to accurately assess chronic wounds, implement appropriate treatment interventions, identify patients who would benefit from specialty referral, and incorporate advanced wound care therapies into clinical practice when appropriate. The ultimate goal of this program is to improve wound healing outcomes, reduce complications, and support high-quality, patient-centered care for individuals living with chronic wounds.
Target Audience
Physicians (Primary Care Providers, Hospitalists, Surgeons, Specialists) Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses Case Managers and Care Coordinators Physical Therapists (PT) Occupational Therapists (OT) Social Workers Public Health Professionals
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate between arterial ulcers, venous ulcers, pressure injuries, and diabetic foot ulcers based on clinical presentation, risk factors, and underlying pathophysiology.
2. Implement evidence-based assessment and management strategies for patients with chronic wounds to promote healing and reduce complications.
3. Identify appropriate treatment options and referral pathways for patients with complex or non-healing wounds.
4. Describe the indications, contraindications, benefits, and expected outcomes of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) in wound management.
5. Apply multidisciplinary approaches to wound care that support improved patient outcomes, enhanced care coordination, and reduced risk of wound-related complications.
6. Integrate current best practices for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries, diabetic foot ulcers, venous ulcers, and arterial ulcers into clinical practice.
7. Recognize opportunities for early intervention and specialty referral to improve healing rates, decrease hospitalization, and reduce the risk of amputation and other adverse outcomes.
