Date & Time of Session - 10/6/25 - from 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Needs/Overview
The effectiveness and safety of medications varies dramatically from person to person, influenced by genetic makeup alongside individual clinical characteristics and demographic factors. By implementing pharmacogenomic testing and genotype-informed prescribing strategies, healthcare systems can potentially enhance patient outcomes while reducing the substantial economic burden associated with preventable adverse drug reactions. However, the promise of personalized medication therapy faces significant barriers in real-world implementation. Insurance coverage policies and regulatory frameworks have not kept pace with scientific advances, creating gaps that limit patient access to potentially life-saving genetic testing. In my presentation, I would like to give a brief introduction to pharmacogenomics, cover barriers in place from insurance and the attempts to advance coverage through legislation. Finally, I will describe our current efforts at St. Elizabeth as part of the Precision Medicine Program.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Define pharmacogenomics and explain its role in precision medicine
2. Outline the current insurance coverage landscape for pharmacogenomic testing
