Pain Management From Inpatient to Outpatient Settings: Safe Opioid Use for Complex Patients (October 26, 2026)
This live virtual grand rounds session is part of the Pain Management From Inpatient to Outpatient Settings: Safe Opioid Use for Complex Patients series. It equips healthcare professionals with practical strategies for managing pain and opioid therapy during transitions of care, including opioid stewardship, risk assessment, patient and caregiver education, naloxone counseling, and care of patients with opioid tolerance or opioid use disorder (OUD). Participants will also have access to an AI-powered patient simulator to practice real-life patient conversations.

To receive credit: attend the entire session, complete the post-test (70% or higher) and the evaluation, and claim credit online by December 26, 2026. Pharmacists' credit will be uploaded to CPE Monitor.

Target Audience
Physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, care coordinators, and other healthcare professionals involved in pain management, opioid stewardship, and transitions of care.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to:
- Describe the fundamental concepts of pain management, including definitions and mechanisms of pain.
- Determine risk factors for substance use disorders when assessing patients in pain who are receiving care in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Summarize the range of therapeutic options for managing pain, including nonpharmacologic approaches and pharmacologic (both nonopioid and opioid analgesics) therapies.
- Integrate opioid analgesics into a pain treatment plan based on the needs of the patient and their level of functioning.
- Explain how to safely and effectively manage patients on opioid analgesics in the acute and chronic pain settings, including initiating therapy, titrating, and discontinuing use of opioid analgesics in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Explain the safe use of opioid analgesics, including proper storage and disposal, with patients and caregivers.
- Demonstrate the use of naloxone for opioid overdose to patients and caregivers.
- Determine when referral to a pain specialist is needed.
- Apply the fundamental elements of addiction medicine, including the use of MOUD.
