State-of-the-Art Anesthesiology for the Generalist: Practical Updates and High-Risk Management 2027

March 20, 2027

General anesthesiology clinicians frequently encounter high-risk perioperative scenarios but may have variable familiarity with current evidence, evolving medication guidance, principles of crisis management, and multidisciplinary care pathways. This creates variability in risk recognition, escalation, communication, and management of complex patients in the operating room, non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) locations, and perioperative settings. There is a gap between current best practices and real-world management of high-risk perioperative conditions, including advanced cardiac disease, anticoagulation, difficult airway physiology, pulmonary hypertension, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), liver disease, anaphylaxis, transfusion management, pregnancy, analgesia, and vasopressor selection.

Target Audience

Anesthesiology physicians

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Recognize high-risk perioperative conditions in general anesthesiology practice.
2. Employ current evidence-based practices and practical management strategies to navigate high-risk perioperative environments.
