Date & Time of Session - 3/20/26 - from 12:00 - 1:00PM
Overview
Hypertension affects nearly half of adults within the United States and increases the risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. While many patients are diagnosed with essential hypertension, secondary hypertension remains an often underrecognized factor that contributes to uncontrolled and resistant hypertension. Recently published guidelines emphasize the importance of earlier screening in certain patient populations and highlight the importance of targeted therapy toward the underlying cause. Pharmacists may play a critical role in uncovering causes and managing secondary hypertension by performing comprehensive medication reviews, identifying disease-specific signs and symptoms, and optimizing antihypertensive regimens.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate secondary hypertension from primary hypertension
2. Identify patient populations that warrant screening for secondary hypertension
3. Develop an etiology-based treatment plan for a patient with secondary hypertension
Target Audience
Pharmacists, residents, and students
