In-Flight Medical Emergencies for the Pediatrician

In-flight medical emergencies (IME) represent an area of apprehension for the majority of physicians, owing to unfamiliar environment and resources coupled with fear of liability. 90% of IME involve adults, creating an additional layer of unfamiliarity for pediatricians that may influence their comfort in volunteering to assist. This talk is intended to demystify IME for pediatricians and provide them with the knowledge necessary to confidently participate as a medical volunteer.

  • List the most common causes of in-flight medical emergencies (IME) in adults and children

  • Explain unique pathophysiologic factors contributing to IME

  • Summarize material and expert resources available during IME

  • Navigate medico-legal considerations surrounding IME

  • Contribute as a medical volunteer during IME involving both adult and pediatric patients
